Education, Health and Social Care
Attention to Detail
Special educational needs (“SEN”) can affect a child or young person’s ability to learn therefore some children and young people will need more support than others to achieve their full learning potential.
They may need extra help, for example, because they have difficulty with reading, understanding, talking, managing their emotions or behaviour, or developing physical skills. A child who needs a lot of extra help in any of these areas has special educational needs (SEN).
Educational settings (schools, nurseries and colleges) have a legal duty to support children and young people with additional needs and disabilities and to treat them fairly. While this may be so, it is a very challenging task ensure needs are appropriately identified and met with many affected young children and young people often not getting the right support or being excluded from educational setting as a result.
Our role is to support you and empower you to make informed decisions and know your rights. We will assist you at any stage of your journey which includes but is not limited to:
1. Statutory Assessment of Needs
2. Education and Health Care Plan Annual reviews
3. Special education needs home-school transport
Social Care Assessments
Customer Focused
A health and social care assessment is carried out by social services to find out what help and support you need - like healthcare, equipment, help in your home or residential care. While this is a very daunting and intrusive process- it is a process that is designed to positively impact on those who use and are in need of social services.
While social care needs assessments and provision will be undertaken and decided by LA social work teams- our aim is to provide independent support to members of the community to ensure they are aware of their rights and advocate for them to get the best support possible based on individual circumstances. We will endeavour to support individuals to access mainstream universal services and help them identify more specialist services where necessary. This is particularly useful for those either in receipt of Direct Payments (DP) or those considering making a request for Direct Payments from the Local Authority. We also support Direct Payments recipients in managing and their resources with emphasis on maximising use of local services.
Form Filling
DLA, PIP, ESA,
We assist our clients in completing forms and putting together evidence in support of DLA, ESA and PIP applications. We understand how difficult it can be to complete these forms and will sensitively collate expert reports and all the infomation gathered from our clients.
Severe Learning Disabilities & Challenging Behaviour
Equality
‘Challenging behaviour’ is how we talk about a range of behaviours which some people with severe learning disabilities may display to get needs met such as hurting others, self harm, detroying furniture or other things, stripping, eating indelible objects or smearing to name a few.
We have a particular interest for this client group as they are some of the most vulnerable individuals in the community as they often find themselves being excluded form education, locked up for prolonged periods in mental health institutions or isolated due to lack of adequate support and limted undestanding of their needs.
Our vision is for anyone with severe learning disabilities who displays challenging behaviour to have the same life opportunities as everyone else.
While we are not experts in this field, we endeavour to improve understanding of challenging behaviour, empower families with information and support, and help others to provide better services and more opportunities. We support families advocate for this client group and sign post them to more specialist organisations (see resources)
